Adopting PBL at Helia
The purpose of this article is to give an overview of the curriculum transformation process at Helia, Helsinki Business Polytechnic. The article begins from why and how we began to implement problem-based learning. We focus on depicting how we create value through learning relationships and how we selected values to guide our work. We also discuss the integration of the contents, including projects and events. Finally, we emphasise the central role of assessment, which at Helia focuses not only on formal but on procedural knowledge as well. We conclude by briefly summarising the lessons learnt. The article is based on our recent book about the transformation of our international business programme into a PBL curriculum (Fagerholm and Helelä 2003).

Most notably, these dynamic forces have dramatically increased the demand for timely and relevant information to support business decision-making. Today, when one can instantaneously download complete, customized analyses from the Internet at little or no cost, business professionals must clearly demonstrate how their insights add value to their firm.
