Workshop I
Using Virtual Worlds for the Creation of immersive Learning Environments

Workshop leaders: John P. Rogate and Gwen Noteborn

Second Life has been the haven for educators, researchers, and large enterprises across the globe.  Many success stories have been well-documented. While Second Life has proliferated in use over the years, extensive efforts have been underway in the development of an Open Source alternative called OpenSimulator.  OpenSimulator is the reverse-engineered Second Life server code with numerous enhancements. Basically, it is Second Life plus more, and is fully interoperable in every way. OpenSim usage has exceeded in growth over Second Life in 2009.  Now there is a low (or no) cost alternative to Second Life.  What can be achieved by using virtual technologies especially in education at all levels?  What are the success stories?  What are the drawbacks?  How can you get started?  These questions and more will be answered in this exciting workshop. Workshop II
Supporting Student Learning in Work-Based Learning Contexts - Responding to the
Challenges
Workshop leaders: Robin Lowe, David Laughton and Chris Birch

This workshop will explore the nature of work-based learning (pedagogical and epistemological aspects) and examine the challenges in supporting student learning in a work-based context accredited by higher education institutions (HEIs). By way of background, the nature of contemporary demographic change in developed economies will be reviewed, and the implications for workforce development and the role of HEIs will be examined. The workshop will then review a recent UK collaborative initiative involving Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, “Innovation Leaders,” a Higher Education Funding Council for England funded project which aims to develop innovative approaches to work-based learning and increase the number of learners engaged with this mode of education. The challenges the project is responding to include: the identification of employer/employee needs, quality assurance and assessment issues in WBL (including the ways in which learning is evidenced in the workplace), appropriate staff development for university staff to be able to support learning in this context, and the understanding of work-based knowledge as a distinctive form of knowledge. Participants will be invited to share their own experiences with respect to these challenges by way of developing a set of insights that can be drawn upon by practitioners in this area.

Workshop III
How to Get your Papers Published?

Part 1
Meet the Editors of Advances in Business Education & Training
Workshop leader: Piet van den Bossche

Are you thinking of submitting your work to the next volume of ‘Advances in Business Education & Training’? Would you like to discuss your work with the editors? Do you have ideas on promoting the book series?

Our new book series “Advances in Business Education & Training” serves as an international forum for scholarly and state-of-the-art research and development into all aspects of business science education and training.
In Part 1 of this workshop you will have the opportunity to meet the editors. This provides a unique opportunity to share thoughts about this book series and receive first-hand feedback on your ideas and papers that are possible contributions for the next volume(s) of this book series.

We set two goals for Part 1 of this workshop:
1. to give possible contributing authors information on the book series and the demands for publishing
    in it.
2. to share ideas about the future of the book series and its relation with the EDiNEB community.

Part 2
In Part 2 of the workshop (90 minutes) you will have the opportunity to meet with well-published experts in the field of innovative education to be exposed to different perspectives on how to succeed in publishing. A major focus of Part 2 will include small group discussions with experts like Mike McCuddy, Chris Birch and Wim Gijselaers to explore how you can get published in a (wider) range of journals.

Participants will leave the workshop better prepared for the challenges of the publication game!
